Seymour, CT –

On Sunday September 3, the Hurricanes performed at the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) World Championship in Rochester, NY and won their second consecutive World Championship in the Open Class Division.  They competed against drum corps from throughout the United States, placing first during the preliminary competition on Saturday with a score of 88.9, and ultimately going on to score a 89.4 in finals competition.  In addition, the corps won awards for High Percussion and High Effect.

“This is the first time in the 91-year history of the Hurricanes that the corps has won consecutive World Championship titles,” said Hurricanes Director David Pyrch.  The Hurricanes 2023 show was entitled Channel Green, and explored the music of the 1960s.  It included the songs Stormy Weather, White Rabbit, Blowin’ in the Wind and Rocket Man.  Pyrch shared that “It was really special seeing how this year’s show resonated with our alumni and fans.  Stormy Weather was an instant crowd favorite, leading to standing ovations at every show.  The members and staff worked incredibly hard this season and they deserve all of the accolades they are receiving.”

The Connecticut Hurricanes are a non-profit organization based in Seymour, CT.  Founded in 1932 as the John H. Collins Post Fife Drum & Bugle Corps, the Hurricanes are one of the oldest active Drum Corps in the country.  It is the intent of the Hurricanes to provide the members with life changing experiences, educationally and socially, which help each individual member gain real world life skills, musical training and performance experiences. Through the development of the character traits of dedication, discipline and teamwork, each member of this close knit fraternity learns what is required to be successful on and off the performance field.

The 20 24 season will be very different for the Hurricanes, as Drum Corps Associates partners with Drum Corps International and the annual world championship competition moves to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN, home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.  The Hurricanes are actively recruiting for additional members and have our open house/first rehearsal scheduled for Sunday November 26 at Amity High School from 9am to 5pm. There are openings for all sections: brass, color guard, percussion and drum major.  All experience levels are welcome.
