Mr. Robert Kogut holds a Master of Science Degree in Music Education (1983) from Western Connecticut State University. Through over thirty five years of teaching, Mr. Kogut has taught at high School, middle school and elementary school giving him vast experience working with all ages. He has had a long history with the CT Hurricanes since marching snare drum beginning in 1985. This will be his 15 full season with the corps in addition to many years coming in to help out whenever needed. Mr. Kogut was inducted in to the Hurricane Hall of Fame in 2007.
In addition to his drum corps experience, he has written and designed shows for many schools programs. This has led many programs to successful seasons with distinction: Naugatuck High School, East Lyme High School, Fitch High School, Gilbert School, Connecticut Hurricanes, Brookfield High School, Stamford High School, Central Connecticut State University, Sacred Heart University, Trumbull High School, Port Chester Winter Percussion and Shelton High School
Along with his teaching activities Mr. Kogut has also made it his mission to help other programs have the same exceptional experience for their students that he has brought to his programs. He created and coordinated the first Winter Percussion competitions with the Eastern Marching Band Association and the Musical Arts Conference. In addition, he created judging sheets and clinics judges in the development of both marching and concert winter percussion. He developed and coordinated the first Eastern Marching Band Association and the Musical Arts Conference winter percussion competitions. Through his efforts Connecticut Winter programs have grown from three winter ensembles in 1998 to fifteen in 2010 with a number of them have performed at WGI Championships with distinction.
In addition to developing the winter percussion activity Mr. Kogut has also developed the CT All-State and Regional adjudication repertoire and judging criteria. He was the head percussion judges for CT All-State and Regional 2000-2009. In the effort to expand the percussion activity, Robert ran clinics for music educators on the creation of a high school percussion ensemble at the CT All-State convention.
Mr. Kogut has had many accomplishments with his students at Naugatuck High School over his thirty years tenure. The Marching Band has been a three time MAC Class II & III Marching Band Champions. He wrote and directed the Naugatuck High School Percussion Ensemble to two top five placements in WGI and 2007 Bronze medalist as well as being a top eight finalist every year they participated. Naugatuck was the first Connecticut ensemble ever to place in the top three in WGI competition. The Concert Ensemble is the MAC Concert Percussion Champions 2003-2011 and the EMBA Concert Percussion Champions 1998-2004. The Percussion Ensemble has the distinction of being the first percussion ensemble to ever perform in Epcot in Disney World, as well as receiving the 2007 Sweepstakes Award Winner: Showcase Music Festival highest score for all competing groups at the Festival of Music in Orlando, Florida.
Mr. Kogut continues his own musical education by performing in musical theater. He has performed as pit percussionist for Jesus Christ Superstar, Life and Times as Seen Through the Eyes of Cole Porter, Anything Goes, Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat, Fiddler on the Roof, Anything Goes, The King and I, South Pacific, Oliver, Crazy For You, Kiss Me Kate, Pirates of Penzance, Leonard Bernstein’s Mass, Show Boat, Man of LaMancha, Oklahoma, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy, Nunsense, Brigadoon, Bye Bye Birdie, Sweet Charity, Annie, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Some Enchanted Evening”, Songs of a New World, Avenue Q, and Ragtime.
Before retiring from Naugatuck High School as Band Director in 2011 Mr. Kogut’s was responsible for all aspects of the Naugatuck High Schools instrumental program, which included: Marching Band – Drill Writer, Music Arranger, Percussion Write; Winter Percussion – Music Writer and Arranger and Winter Guard Director; Jazz Band – Director/Supervisor; Symphonic and Concert Band Director; Guitar Instructor; Pop Music of the Twentieth Century Instructor and Music Theory Instructor.
Mr. Kogut is thrilled to be part once again part of the long and lustrous history that is the Connecticut Hurricanes.
