What is Drum and Bugle Corps?

The Connecticut Hurricanes Senior Drum and Bugle Corps, first known as the John H. Collins Post #24 Fife & Drum Corps, was organized in 1955 as a field corps and in the year 2009 will enter their 55th consecutive year of field competition.  Based in Seymour, CT, the Hurricanes have won every major title available in senior drum corps and have been steadily climbing through the competitive ranks of Drum Corps Associates (the governing body for modern senior or all-age drum and bugle corps).  They placed 4th in the World at the 2008 World Championships in Rochester, NY.  The management, staff, and membership have committed to returning the Hurricanes to championship caliber and there are high expectations for the 2009 season.  We would love to have you join us as we aim to contend for our 4th Drum Corps Associates World Championship.

Who are the Connecticut Hurricanes?

A drum and bugle corps or drum corps is a musical marching unit (similar to a marching band) consisting of brass instruments, percussion instruments, and color guard.

How Much Time Will it Take?

The Hurricanes are known as “weekend warriors.”  Rehearsals begin during the winter and occur approximately twice a month on Sundays to accommodate members in winter guards or winter percussion groups.  At the end of April, outdoor rehearsals begin and the rehearsal schedule becomes every Saturday and Sunday.  It is then that the music learned all winter is put to drill on the field.  Competitions begin at the end of June on Saturdays with a Sunday rehearsal.  The schedule is made to accommodate members who need to work and attendance is required for all corps functions.

FEE: $750

Many members pay off this fee completely through many fundraising opportunities.

What about School?

The Hurricanes are aware of school commitments and do as much as possible to not schedule functions that conflict with these school obligations.  If there is a conflict, school will take precedence.
